I am still in the recovery position following our office Christmas party - for all the wrong reasons. As office parties go, it has to be the worst one I have ever had to endure. Every minute of it was time I will never get back. Such was the excitement of the evening, one of the directors actually fell asleep at the table - after the starter. And not one of us had an indelible marker to take advantage of the situation. Next year, I will take a do-it-yourself tattoo kit. Mind you, next year I may well take the option of staying at home and putting pins in my eyes. I don't mean to sound all Scroogey and bah humbug, but believe me, it was mind-numbing. I left as the Charades were beginning...
This painful experience also meant that I'm a day late with my cake for the antique whippersnappers. Apparently, they were close to revolt yesterday when it was made known there would be no cake. But normal service has been resumed today and their cake has now been delivered so smiley faces all round at their fine antique emporium. Well, they were smiling when I delivered it. Whether they'll be smiling after tasting it remains to be seen.
I was in two minds what to bake for them this week. One idea was an orange polenta cake but after some consideration, I decided to go old school and make them a good old fashioned Victoria Sponge. A bit summery perhaps, with it's whipped cream and strawberries, but surely a bit of cake-based sunshine won't go amiss in this miserable weather? I've asked them what sort of cake they'd like next week so maybe I'll get some festive suggestions.
The recipe for this is the same one I always use - 175 gms each of sugar, butter and flour, 3 eggs and some vanilla paste. Strawberries with a whiff of icing sugar and whipped cream in the middle, and for the top, a dusting of icing sugar over a home made snowflake template (think Edward Scissorhands)- who has the nerve to scoff at my craft drawer now?
My office party experience and the terrible weather means I need at least two things to cheer me up this week. And here they are:
Jingle Bells!

Sorry to hear the Xmas party was such a bore, hope the cake goes down better!
Thanks Kat, I'm over it now! Up in Manchester over Christmas and New Year so if you're about, give us a shout. Be lovely to meet up and talk cake!
Barnes you should have come to my Christmas do! It was amazing! It's hard to believe you can have so much fun on your own with a rented photocopier, no indelible marker pen action either though - the surprise element being lost when you indelibly mark yourself..
Now Mrs Table, didn't I warn you off the copier?? And h'actually, the surprise element with the indelible marker need not be lost. Not with the correct amount of pirate juice :)
